Trask Potter and Walter Jansen had met
at lunch-time today and had eaten together, reminiscing casually about their former friendship. In the course of their talk, Trask had asked, "How do you like owning your own home out in the suburbs? What made you decide to leave your eity apartment?"
"We had been thinking about making the move for some time,' Walter replied. "Then we had some trouble with someone in the building, something very nasty, and that decided us."
"That's too bad. Most of the people in the building seem very nice. A young woman on our floor is helping keep an eye on our daughter, Wendy, while Libby is out west taking care of her sick mother, "trask told him. "Vicki Campbell has made things a lot easier for us."
"Vicki Campbell?" asked Walter in surprised alarm. "With her, you've got lots more troubles, not less."
"What do you mean? She and Wendy seem to have become real friendly, from what I hear."
"Too friendly, I'll bet," said Walter hotly. "She's the reason Betty and I decided to leave the city. She's bad news, pal."
"In what way?" asked Trask in alarm.
"Only because your young Wendy may be in trouble, I'll tell you what happened," said Walter seriously. "That Vicki Campbell started getting very friendly with my wife, Betty. Just for kicks, she got Betty on goof-balls, drugs of some sort. And then when Betty was all woozy and giggly and dopey from the goof-balls, Vicki started making Lesbian love to her."
"That's awful. And you think that Vicki
may be pulling the same trick on Wendy?" demanded Trask in alarm.
"I inquired around and found out that Vicki is a call-girl, a high-priced whore, so her days are pretty much free. Like most whores, she basically hates all men and gets her sexkicks from other girls. She seems to make a play for any attractive young girl she thinks she can seduce."
"I'll put a stop to that right now," said Trask angrily. "I'll show her she can't get away with stuff like that with Wendy."
"
"Take it easy, fellow, or you'll be making plenty of trouble for yourself and Wendy,' warn Walter. "If you try to beat her up, or anything like that, she'll haul you into court for assault, and deny all your charges. If you even publicly accuse her of active Lesbianism with Wendy, she'll sue you for libel, and it will be her word against the child's. And how will your young daughter feel about admitting in public court to indulging in sexual perversion. Imagine what a Roman holiday the news papers will have, going into all the lurid details and exaggerating everything to the utmost. You'd better think before to do anything foolish."
The two men talked for half an hour, and finally came up with a plan that would not only save Wendy from her seducer, but would also arrange to punish Vicki appropriately and severely for her present and previous misdeeds.
Trask wasn't due home until dinner-time, and it was now only two-o'clock in the afternoon. He and Walter went directly to Trask's apartment and entered immediately. Their first glance into Wendy's bedroom confirmed Walter's suspicions. Stretched out on her bed was the lovely
